STORY: The Los Angeles branch of the British Academy of Film and
Television Arts (BAFTA)/L.A. is honoring U.K. comedienne Tracey Ullman.
Uber entertainer Ullman was named the winner of the Charlie Chaplin
Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2nd Annual British Comedy Festival.
The event was held Friday (May 8) night at the swanky Four Seasons
Hotel in Los Angeles to honor the best of British television and theatrical
comedies produced in the U.K. in 2008.
The awards ceremony was part of a week-long celebration of all things
British in the L.A. area.
Ullman, 49, talked about why winning an award by her peers was so
special to her.
"Oh it's lovely, especially from the Brits (Reporter: Why is that
special to you?) Because we're not used to, not usually so appreciating. And
we don't-- we care about each other really, but we don't often show it. This
is very nice you know."
Event host Sharon Osbourne shared why she loves Ullman.
"But it's not just her humour, it's everything that she
does," noted the 56-year-old wife of rocker Ozzy Osbourne. "You
know, she's so, she can do anything. You know, she can be a serious actress,
she can be the funniest woman on the planet. She can dance, she can sing.
There's nothing she can't do. She's scary."
British actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim recalled seeing Ullman on television
when he lived across the pond.
"Yes, she's one of the originals isn't she? So, um, yeah, I think
she's fantastic. I remember watching her when I was living in England, and
watching her grow. She's a very funny, very funny lady."
Actress and comedienne Kathy Griffin talked about what she admired
about Ullman.
"Tracey Ullman is of course an idol of mine," smiled
Griffin, 48. "She does it all. She's funny. She can be poignant. She's a
great writer. She does these characters that are so memorable. And also I like
that she does characters that are white and black and male and female, and
nothing stops her."
When asked what inspired her comedy, Ullman said she just purely
enjoyed creating humor.
"Ah, I just like to laugh. I always like to have a good laugh, I
like laughing at myself and imitating people, and you know, it's, he makes me
laugh more than anything. Funniest thing in my life. We've been married 25
years, and he still makes me laugh every day."
The BAFTA/LA 2nd Annual British Comedy Festival Chair Nigel Lythgoe
talked about one of the important purposes of the event.
"Now this as you say sort of culminates Brit Week,"
explained Lythgoe, The whole idea of this is to bring British comedy over
here. And give it to American executives to say 'Hey, which do you think is
the funniest comedy?' ANd what we're actually doing is introducing new forms
of comedy to them, and they're going 'Oh I like this Gavin and Stacey. Oh,
that Peter Kay is very good. Catherine Tate, wow.' Otherwise they would never
had heard of these people."
